In 1871, in the year that Essylt Hannah Griffiths was born, on March 22nd, William Holden became the first governor of a U.S. state - North Carolina - to be impeached and removed from office. His impeachment and removal was related to charges arising from his attempted suppression of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1889, at the age of 18 years old, Essylt was alive when on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.
