Esther Alice (Manderson) Thomson of VIC Australia was born in 1903 in Eaglehawk, Greater Bendigo City County to George Manderson and Ruth Naomi (Gwillim) Manderson. She had siblings Hilda Ruth Manderson, Hilda Naomi Manderson, Oswald Gwillin Manderson, Peter Harold Manderson, and Charles David Manderson. Esther Thomson married Hugh Halpin Thomson in 1936, and died at age 91 years old on June 10, 1995.

Containing several essays on the African-American experience in America, much of the book was based on Du Bois' own life. The book was one of the very early works in the science of sociology.

In 1950, she was 47 years old when in February, Joe McCarthy gave a speech alleging that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who worked in the State Department. He went on to chair a committee that investigated not only the State Department but also the administration of President Harry S. Truman, the Voice of America, and the U.S. Army for communist spies - until he was condemned by the U.S. Senate in 1954.
