She had siblings Emma Louisa Carter, Charles George Matthew Carpenter, Albert Edward Carpenter, and Frederick Arthur Carpenter. She married Andreas Oscar Smitt in 1920, and had a child Estella Thelma Smitt. Ethel Smitt died at age 61 years old in 1953 in Warragul, Baw Baw Shire County, VIC.
