Etta was from upstate Pennsylvania Locust Gap area and Mt Carmel. Her father John Brecker was a coal miner, her mother Jennie Elliott died when she was a baby giving birth to her sister.

Etta attended Bloomsburg University before moving to Philadelphia to work in a factory. She played basketball for Bloomsburg in the 1920s

Etta loved spending time with family, she vacationed every year to the Jersey shore and stayed at the Irish Pub hotel in Atlantic city with her husband Jimmy and Best Friend Bridget Haffey. She spent time on the porch in the rockers and loved people watching. Etta also loved TV and crosswords games. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and even took them downtown Philadelphia on the train for special occasions. She enjoyed Irish music and going out to eat at places like Emmett's place, Big Bill's on 5th street and the Rhawnhurst cafe to name a few. She generally enjoyed life.
