    Etta was my Great Grandmother I have a vague memory of her. One that comes to mind was my papaw (Etta’s son) taking me to visit and sitting in her lap. But I can close my eyes and see her smiling face.

In 1884, in the year that Etta Sarratt was born, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.

In 1905, at the age of 21 years old, Etta was alive when the first movie theater opened in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the first theater to show nothing but movies - silent films. Two men, John P. Harris and his brother-in-law Harry Davis, opened the Nickelodeon on Smithfield Street - charging 5 cents for admission. The first day, 450 people watched movies at the new theater - on the second day, more than 1500 people stood in line to get in.
