    Eugene Poddany is the son of Frank and Totiana (Girgilevich) Poddany. He had a younger sister named Angelina. His father was born in Czechoslovakia and his mother was born in Russia. Growing up he spoke Russian. He was born on December 23, 1919 in Harbin, Heilongjiang China and later immigrated to the US as a young boy where he resided in Los Angeles County, California and became a naturalized citizen. Eugene served in the US Army from March 20, 1943 until his discharge on November 18, 1945. He worked as an animated motion picture scorer, composing music for various cartoon films, including "The Woody Woodpecker Show (series)." He provided background music for TV shorts such as "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" (excluding the songs), "The Pogo Special Birthday Special," and "Horton Hears a Who!" Additionally, he created the music for Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat Song Book."

In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
