Evelyn Maud (Priestley) Hopgood of Kew, City of Boroondara County, VIC Australia was born circa 1884 in Mangalore. She was married to Wilfred Ernest Hopgood in 1901, and had children Elsie May Hopgood, Florence Evelyn Hopgood, Robert George Hopgood, Christine Ethel Hopgood, Rita Winifred Hopgood, Laura Ruth Hopgood, and Roy Arnold Hopgood. Evelyn Hopgood died at age 86 years old circa 1970 in Kew.

In 1884, in the year that Evelyn Maud Priestley was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. In 1906, Evelyn was 22 years old when Finland became the first European country to give women the vote and to allow them to run for political office. (Women in Australia and New Zealand already had that right but couldn't run for office.) Although Finland belonged to the Russian Empire, there was great unrest and the Tsar wanted to broker a quick peace. As a part of the brokered peace, women got the vote.
