Introduction

Ezekiel Whitley was a private man who didn't like talking about his past or his personal life, especially his struggles with throat and lung cancer. In his prime, he served in the US Army and fought during WW2. When he retired from the military, he struggled with PTSD, though during those times it was difficult for African American soldiers to be diagnosed or treated for war-time traumas. He dealt with his struggles like most men did during those times, and he turned to alcoholism. His marriage and relationship with his children were strained for years to come. He loved John Wayne movies, the TV series, "In the Heat of the Night", and enjoyed eating lemon head candy. He enjoyed frequent visits from his daughters Renee Whitley and Gwendolyn Hargis. He had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that kept in touch with him in his later years through letters, phone calls, and visits. Although many of his children remember him as a difficult and often absent father, he is also remembered as being a wonderful grandfather.
