Elizabeth Saunders was a white woman who married an aboriginal man named Joseph Crough. Letters show that Rev. Hagenaeur wrote Joseph to admonish him to keep rules on the Framlingham Reserve and return to his house on the reserve in order to not lose it. Hagenaeur also provided support in the form of rations, which was unusual at the time, to assist the Croughs, though this ceased at the appointment of Dirkwood the new BPA man. (A final single rations was sent after the new appointment with an accompanying letter explaining it could not continue after this last assistance) Interestingly, although Hageneaur was considered a compassionate and patient man in his work with the BPA (Board of Protection for Aborigines) it was he who lobbied chiefly for the so called "half caste act" bought into being in 1886 calling for children of mixed white and aboriginal blood to be removed from mission reserves. Most likely he saw this as for their own improvement. Thus begins the Stolen Generations
