In 1859, in the year that Fanny Friswell was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1882, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.
