Faye E. (WOODFORD) Sterns was born circa 1897 in Iowa United States to Harry L. Woodford and Katherine "Kate" Ethel Wintermantel, and had siblings John K. Woodford, Glen Lewis Woodford, Alice A. Woodford, Harry Gaye Woodford, Bernerd W. Woodford, Elmer Woodford, and Eleanor Woodford. Faye Sterns married Earl Sterns, and died at age 27 years old in 1924.

In 1897, in the year that Faye E. Woodford was born, in the January 22nd issue of "Engineering", the word "computer" was first used to refer to a mechanical calculation device. Previously - since the 17th century - the term computer meant "one who computes" and referred to human beings who worked with numbers.

In 1904, when she was just 7 years old, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
