Her father Neil McCalman was born Iona, Argyl Scotland 25.11.1835 Baptised 5.12.1835. Neil 15yrs old when he arrived in Australia with his father Archibald McCalman born 1802 Ilse of Mull and his wife Catherine Livingston. Flora's mother Chrisitina Kennedy arrived with her parents when she was 8 yrs old. Flora Louisa McCalman married Michael Kirk Ritchie at Meering West, Victoria Australia 13.8.1901. The McCalman's were apart of the Buchanan Clan of Scotland.

In 1877, in the year that Flora Louisa Mccalman was born, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.

In 1882, at the age of merely 5 years old, Flora was alive when on January 5th, writer and lawyer Charles J. Guiteau was found guilty of the assassination of President Garfield. Guiteau was "offended" because his job applications had been rejected by Garfield's government. He was sentenced to death -although his lawyer plead insanity - and hanged five months later, on June 30th.

In 1918, she was 41 years old when following European countries, Daylight Saving Time went into effect in the United States in March. It was an effort to conserve fuel needed to produce electric power. This was a war effort and proved unpopular so in most areas of the United States, Daylight Saving Time ended after World War I. It returned during World War II.

In 1939, when she was 62 years old, on the 1st of September, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. On September 17th, the Soviet Union invaded Poland as well. Poland expected help from France and the United Kingdom, since they had a pact with both. But no help came. By October 6th, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany held full control of the previously Polish lands. Eventually, the invasion of Poland lead to World War II.

In 1959, in the year of Flora Louisa Mccalman's passing, on January 3rd, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States and the first state not a part of the contiguous United States. The flag was changed to display 49 stars.
