Florence M. Weckert, age 89, of Cloquet, MN, died peacefully Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, MN, from complications of Alzheimer’s. The fourth of five children, she was born August 15, 1923, in Brule WI to Italian immigrant parents Antonio and Maria (Graziano) Slaviero. Florence moved to Superior where she graduated from Superior East High School in 1941. Her first job was with Globe Ship Building Company and later as a cashier at Piggly Wiggly in Duluth until she married Raymond J. Weckert of Cloquet, MN, on June 18, 1949. After moving to Cloquet, Florence landed a job with Diamond Brands/Jarden working there for over 30 years. After the closing of St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, she transferred to Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Her favorite hobbies were Word Find games, volunteering, and swimming. Having learned to swim when in her sixties, Florence swam three days a week and taught a water exercise class for seniors. She volunteered her time for AARP, the Cloquet School District, VFW functions, Queen of Peace St. Casimir’s Circle, Sunnyside Nursing Home, Pro-Life, was a volunteer services award winner for Carlton County and a mentor for Junior Achievement. Florence enjoyed the company of friends whether lunching, volunteering or just socializing, and was always available to help with their transportation requests or other needs. Those who knew her say she was an outstanding friend. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren know she was a generous, loving person. A member of many organizations, Florence’s favorites were AARP, TOPS/CUL, Red Hatters, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, St. Casimir’s Circle, Senior Swim, Diamond Jewels, and the Forever 50 Fellowship, but she most enjoyed the time spent with family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her God-child, and her many friends. Many may remember her 30 years as the local Avon lady. Having traveled extensively in the USA, she later visited Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia, India, the Bahamas, South America, Mexico, and Canada with her daughter, Deborah. Her two favorite sayings “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” and “I’m such an Angel!” were said with a mischievous glint in her pale blue eyes. She always made people feel good about themselves, was quick to laugh, and was best known for her beautiful, white, wavy hair. Husband, Raymond; her three brothers, Michael, Peter, and Anthony Slaviero Jr.; and one sister, Antoinette (Al) Carlson, preceded her in death. Florence is survived by two daughters, Deborah Weckert and Cheryl (Rodger) Witeli; and one son, Carey (Tammy Macklin) Weckert; five grandchildren, Cynthia (TJ) Helmerich, Joseph (Crystal) Weckert, Eric Witeli, Sara Witeli, Anthony Witeli, and God-child Aaron Rud; and two great-grandchildren, Ella Rose Helmerich and Pauline Weckert, with another due in August. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 3, 2013 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet MN. Inurnment was in New Calvary Cemetery.
