In 1909, in the year that Florence Maybelle Billings was born, Polish physician and medical researcher Paul Ehrlich found a cure for syphilis, which was a prevalent (but undiscussed) disease. He found that an arsenic compound completely cured syphilis within 3 weeks.

In 1910, Florence was just 1 year old when Angel Island, which is in San Francisco Bay, became the immigration center for Asians entering U.S. It was often referred to as "The Ellis Island of the West". Due to restrictive laws against Chinese immigration, many immigrants spent years on the island.

In 1959, when she was 50 years old, on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.

In 1962, at the age of 53 years old, Florence was alive when on February 20th, Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. The Friendship 7 flew three times around the earth in 4 hours and 55 minutes. At age 77, Glenn returned to space - the oldest person to fly in space.

In 1975, by the time she was 66 years old, in January, Popular Mechanics featured the Altair 8800 on it's cover. The Altair home computer kit allowed consumers to build and program their own personal computers. Thousands were sold in the first month.

Sometimes you just have to let loose and dance...and that's just what they did in the Roaring 1920's. After World War I and just before The Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression, people just wanted to have fun. Perky and energetic, you couldn't stay still when you saw this and that's still true. Merry White Christmas Wishes!

First performed by Bing Crosby (on radio) on Christmas in 1941, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" has become a classic.
