    Florence Mooring McQuirk, known to one and all by her nickname of “Skeeter,” was a fifth generation Texan, born in Wichita Falls on 3/3/24, granddaughter of pioneers who built the first hotel there. Until she was nine years old, she took five kinds of dancing. At 16, she graduated from Wichita Falls High School. She got an Associate Degree in Math and Accounting from Hardin Jr. College, attended the University of Texas one semester, got a scholarship to Purdue University, graduated in Aeronautical Engineering in 1943 at the age of 19. She was in the First Graduating Class of Cadettes at Purdue University, February 12 - December 14, 1943. She worked for Curtis Wright Corporation in Columbus, Ohio where Navy Helldivers were built. Back in Wichita Falls, she worked for Wichita Engineering and met her husband-to-be at Sheppard Air Force Base. He was a Chief Warrant Officer. They married May 7th, 1945, had five children and five grandchildren. She has been a Room Mother, Cub Scout, Brownie and Scout leader. Over the years, She held many positions in her church. Her favorite was two years as Sacristan. After attending many bible study classes, she hosted a bible study class in her home where class members were also making rosaries for the men in the services. She has been active in the political arena, too, working many elections for her congressman, Jim Collins, and was on his Kitchen Cabinet/Board which provided him with feedback and discussed what was going on in Dallas. She was an election judge in her precinct many times.
