Did you know?
In 1906, in the year that Floy S Burkhead was born, author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

In 1937, at the age of 31 years old, Floy was alive when on May 28th, the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge opened to cars. Taking 5 years to build, the 4,200-foot-long suspension bridge was an engineering marvel of its time - 11 men died during construction. The "international orange" color was chosen because it resisted rust and fading. To the present, it is the symbol of the City that is known throughout the world.

Political Family Dynasties In The United States
Just as sons of blacksmiths often become blacksmiths and sons of doctors also become doctors, so sons (and now daughters) of politicians often become politicians. Take the U.S. Senate, in 2016, out of 100 members a full third - 33 of them - were the father, son, mother, daughter, husband or wife of at least one other public official. It's a family business!
