Floyd served in the US Army as a Private during World War II. Floyd married Rita in Los Angeles, California and he then resided in Riverside County, CA. He worked as a truck driver for Matlack Trucking in the Los Angeles area.

He grew up in Poplar Springs, De Kalb, Alabama and Valley Head, Dekalb, Alabama. Around 1916 he married Julia and the couple raised their family in DeKalb County, Alabama where he was a farmer. He passed away on October 16, 1938 in Fort Payne, DeKalb County, Alabama. His mother Julia was born on December 31, 1896 in Georgia and grew up in Militia District 855, North Carolina, Floyd, Georgia. After marrying Abner in 1916, the couple resided in Poplar Springs, Dekalb, Alabama. She passed away on December 4, 1988 in Riverside County, California.

    The Press-Enterprise, Riverside, CA, Wednesday, July 10, 1996, page B8 Hemet Floyd Chambers Graveside services for Floyd David Chambers, 72, will be at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Riverside National Cemetery, staging area three. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Jones Mortuary in Hemet. He died of prostate cancer Saturday at his home. Mr. Chambers, who was born at Fort Payne, Ala., lived in Hemet for 29 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943. He worked as a truck driver for Matlack Trucking in the Los Angeles area. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Ruth Ann; two sons, Larry of Riverside and Floyd David Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Saundra Moore of Midvale, Utah and Sandra Neilson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Rector of Whittier; and three brothers, Herman of Homeland, A.C. of Fort Payne, Ala. and Alfard of Mentone, Ala. In 1924, in the year that Floyd David Chambers was born, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.

In 1947, Floyd was 23 years old when on April 15th, Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing first base. He was the first black man to play in the Major Leagues. Since the 1880's, professional baseball had been segregated and blacks played in the "Negro leagues". He went on to play for 10 years.
