In 1868, in the year that Fortunato Esposito was born, on August 13th, an estimated 8.5 to 9 earthquake struck southern Peru. It had a category "extreme" effect and caused over 25,000 deaths. The resulting tsunami affected areas as far away as Hawaii and New Zealand.

In 1891, Fortunato was 23 years old when from March 9th through the 12th, a blizzard hit the south and west of England. Called the Great Blizzard of 1891, it led to snow drifts of up to 15 feet and killed 200 people and 6,000 animals. Fourteen ships sank.
