Hugo Ludolff (brother of Max and Robert Ludolff ) enlisted in WW1 under the name of Albert Neil and then again under the name of Bert Leahy. The names were to hide his German ancestry and he listed his next of kin on his WW1 enlistment papers as Mrs Cook of 9 Park St, Abbotsford, Victoria. I was given access to Repatriation files and found a letter from her signed Mrs Frances E. Cooke at this address seeking information about Bert Leahy. Mrs F.E. Cooke of this address was the parent of Robert Edward Cooke WW1 regimental number :2335, Church of England, a bootmaker of 24 Hood St, Collingwood, Victoria at the time of enlistment , 4th may, 1915. He was in the 7th Battalion and entered in the Nominal Roll as the 60th Battalion. I feel this Mrs Cooke may have been a relative rather than a friend of Bert Leahy.I am wondering if this Frances Cooke was related to Martha Frances Cooke who married Frederick Max Ludolff and had a child named Max Wiliiam Ludolff who also lived in Collingwood, Victoria...or could Frances Cooke have used her maiden name to hide the German surname as some family members had to do to avoid the persecution of German Australians under the War Precautions Act? More than 7, 000 German Australians were locked away in internment camps because Australia was fearful during WW1. I am unlocking the past of my birth father, Hugo Ludolff (aka Bert Leahy).
