Frances (nee Santoro) Capasso died peacefully on September 30 at her home in Columbia, Maryland in the care and comfort of her daughter and son in law, Lee and Andre Vernot and her son Gus Capasso of Indianapolis. Also present were her nephew and his wife, Frank and Marie Scinicariello and family friends. The cause of death was cancer. Mrs. Capasso was born December 21, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest of three daughters born to Concetta Fusto and Giuseppi Santoro. An older half-sister, from her mother’s first marriage and her two younger sisters, preceded Mrs. Capasso in death. She married John Capasso on October 31, 1936. They moved to the Bronx where they lived for 40 years. Mr. Capasso passed away in 1980. Mrs. Capasso worked as a seamstress in New York’s garment district for almost 42 years. She was a proud member of the ILGW (International Ladies Garment Workers) Local 143. In 1976, she and her husband retired to their “country home” in Peekskill, New York, where she enjoyed gardening and attending her many social clubs. She traveled extensively in retirement, visiting her family in Hawaii and England, and vacationing in Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Canada, Bermuda and throughout the United States. Throughout her life, Mrs. Capasso inspired friends, family and strangers alike – all charmed by her kind words, warm smile and can-do spirit. In addition to her daughter and son, she is survived by two granddaughters and their husbands, Andrea Vernot and Brent Burkhardt, and Gigi and Jim Eggers, and one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Burkhardt.
