William Cole, his sister Frances, and his future wife, Elizabeth Comley all arrived in Melbourne, Victoria Australia on the ship Manchester in January 1849. The three were all from Gloucestershire in England. Their ship carried 236 "bounty immigrants" to the new colony of Melbourne. William Cole stated his profession on the ship's manifest as "shoemaker", Frances as "housemaid", and Elizabeth as "nursemaid" and all three recorded they"could read and write".
