He had siblings Florence Irene Brooke, Ethel Victoria Brooke, and Herbert Holcombe. He married Ethel Hilda Robinson in 1937, and had a child Ian James Holcombe. Francis Holcombe died at age 66 years old on September 7, 1979 in Prahran, City of Stonnington County.

In 1913, in the year that Francis Owen Holcombe was born, the 17th Amendment, establishing the direct election of U.S. Senators, was adopted. Previously, Senators were elected by state legislatures. As early as 1826, a call to elect senators through popular vote was championed and previous to the 17th amendment, two states had already changed their process. Governors are still able to appoint senators to vacant seats until an election can be held.

His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.
