Franciszek Krys was the brother of my grandmother, Helena Ryczynska, née Krys
Franciszek was born in Poland, I do not know his place of birth. In 1939, he was drafted into the Polish Army, sent to the Eastern Front, and was taken prisoner by the Soviet army. In 1942, he joined Władysław Anders' Army and went through the Middle East to Egypt and then to the Italian front. He took part in the Battle of Monte Cassino. He was awarded the Cross of Monte Cassino medal No. 28847. Wounded in battle, he was sent to a hospital ship, then to Spain and Great Britain. A few years later, he emigrated to the US with his wife and settled permanently in California. He visited Poland for the first time since 1939 in 1982. He returned to his homeland several times. He was an active member of the Polish American community. Apparently he had two sons. He met Pope John Paul II personally during a special audience for World War II veterans.
