    Frank Edward Ackerson 1934 - 2013 | Obituary | Condolences Frank Edward Ackerson Obituary Frank Edward Ackerson, 79, of Ionia, peacefully passed away on Thursday morning following a stroke. Ed was born on May 19, 1934, to Glen and Ivah (Gates) Ackerson in Palo, Mich. He graduated from Ionia High School with the class of 1952 and married Mary Wood on July 11, 1954. They celebrated 59 years together. From this union, Ed and Mary had three children - Steve, Janine and Ron. Ed was employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections for 31 years, with the last 30 years being at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia, retiring in 1993. Ed enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife, fishing, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and relaxing with various family members in his favorite locations in the Upper Peninsula. He also enjoyed "puttering" around the house and in his work shed. He was best known for his quick wit and sense of humor, which will be dearly missed. He is loved and survived by his wife and children, Steve (Audrey) Ackerson, Janine (Scott) Kooienga and Ron (Darice) Ackerson; grandchildren, Nick Kooienga, Jessica Kooienga and Molly Ackerson; sister Darlene and a brother Jim (Karen); many nieces and nephews; many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Glenn, Louie and Don and sister, Lorraine. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. A memorial of Ed's life will be celebrated at the Lehman Funeral Home on Friday at 3 p.m., officiated by Pastor Jamey Nichols, with a brief visitation at 2 p.m. preceding the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to Ionia Area Hospice or a Hospice of your choice. Online condolences may be made at lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
