Born on April 1st in 1911, Francis J. Jenny was a son of Alois Jenny Jr. and Mary Schwab-Jenny of Utica New York. Francis attended St Joseph’s grammar school, from which he graduated as the Valedictorian of his class. He then attended Utica’s Assumption Academy, where again he won the Valedictorian honor. He was awarded several scholarships, but was forced to delay his advanced schooling due to an illness he contracted following an operation. After his recovery, Francis– known as Frank - , resumed his schooling at the University of Notre Dame, with his tuition paid (or wavered) from scholarships that he received. Once again excelling in his studies, Frank graduated at the top of his class in chemical engineering, and was ranked third academically in the entire University. While at Notre Dame, Frank published a paper "Design of an apparatus for the study of heat flow through a condensing vapor film". Frank's achievements at ND won for him a fellowship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the premier engineering school of the day. After earning his Masters in Chemical Engineering at MIT, Frank was awarded an additional fellowship and won more scholarships which he applied toward pursuit of his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering. Frank's scholastic achievements were a feature article in Sunday edition of the Utica Observer Dispatch on April 23rd, 1934. After graduation from MIT, Frank applied his talent to the field of research, working for Hydrocarbon Research Inc (HRI) of New York City for his entire career. Frank resided in NYC in an apartment at 460 W 24th Street. Beginning while he was at MIT and continuing throughout his work-life, Frank authored or coauthored numerous technical articles, published by organizations such as Industrial Engineering Chemistry, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineer. His works are still used as reference materials by others in current day research. Frank was granted over a dozen US, Canadian and International Patents, primarily centered upon various processes and inventions related to the synthesis of hydrocarbons and gases. The rights to several of the patents were sold to companies such as Texaco and Shell Oil. The following is a partial listing of Frank’s publications: “Entrainment in Plate Columns” “Graphical solution of problems in multicomponent fractionation” “Nomographs for Enthalpies of Pure Hydrocarbons and Their Mixtures” “Two-Component Equilibrium Curves for MuIticomponent Fractionation” “Representation of Equilibrium Constant Data” The following are some of Frank’s patents that I found: “PROCESS FOR PRODUCING OXYGEN BY LIQUEFACTION OF AIR IN WHICH PORTION OF AIR IS EXPANDED TO SUPPLY REFRIGERATION WITHOUT LOSS OF THE OXYGEN CONTENT OF THE EXPANDED AIR” "Hydrocarbon-Conversion Process” “Method and Apparatus for Synthesizing Hydrocarbons” “Process for synthesizing Hydrocarbons” "Synthesis Gas" “Method for Producing Synthesized Gas” “Method and apparatus for producing synthesis gas” “Method for reducing ores and producing synthesis gas” “Method of converting heavy hydrocarbons into low-boiling hydrocarbons” “Process of producing oxygen” (1951) “Processes of producing oxygen” (1955) Frank passed away in NYC on April 16th, 2005 at the age of 94.
