  • Introduction

    Frank was the youngest of five children. He was the only male child of his family. Frank was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1952 and deployed in Korea. He rose the up ranks to become a corporal and returned to his homeland in 1954. He met his wife Lorraine a year later while they were working in factory in New Jersey. They married in 1956 and had five children of their own; Maryellen, Michael, Laura, Frank, and Lawrence. He fell ill in the 1980’s and died due to complications with ALS in 1988. He was buried in Calverton National Cemetery in Long Island.

    Frank Ragonese was the youngest of five children and only son to Michele and Mary Ragonesi (the original spelling of his surname). Frank’s parents were first cousins whose family hailed from a small mountain commune in Messina called Gaggi. Michele immigrated to the United States in 1927 and resided in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mary was born in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York City. Frank could trace his roots back to the Sicilian peasantry of the 1700’s.

He and his wife Lorraine moved to New York City after their marriage and hopped from burrough to burrough out of necessity. He died on Staten Island, where his youngest child Lawrence had been born 21 years prior.

My story
My name is Lawrence and Frank was my paternal grandfather. My father is his youngest son, Lawrence Patrick. Although I never met Frank, my dad always told me stories about him and his family. I’m told he was a kind and gentle soul who loved his wife and five children dearly.
