We are not sure. Dutch is what my grandfather was told. My family talked about anti German sentiment back then, when my Great grandfather started his business. I was told he changed their name to Keiss from Kiss, but I wonder if it was Von Kiss? Or Van Kiss? It's a mystery I don't have the answer yet...

My grandfather was born in Jersey City, NJ on March 14, 1894.

I'm not sure about completing High School. His Father, my Great Grandfather died suddenly without a Will. My grandfather became an apprentice to learn bricklaying, otherwise he would have worked taking over his father's business. His father had 2 barns of work horses & wagons to transport goods with horse & wagon to NYC & parts of NJ. They were cheated out of their family business by a nasty lawyer.

My Grandfather fought in WWI. He said it was alot of living & fighting in muddy trenches.

My grandfather was a bricklayer & he built the family home for my grandmother,Florence; my mother & uncle.

My grandfather was wonderful. He'd pick me up from grade school & drive me home in his car, 'old Mary'. I remember him always laughing with my mother. He loved animals & especially horses. I asked about a big carved stone in front of their house. He said it was a stepping stone in to help someone get in a wagon or get on a horse.
