  • Introduction

    Frank V. Nickels (1891- 1998), a Philadelphia architect educated at Philadelphia's Drexel Institute (1914), designed schools, auditoriums, convents, churches, rectories and private dwellings, such as 1521 Spruce Street, the Frances Plaza Apartments at Lombard and 20th Street, the Germantown home of Alfred R. Smith, 401 Wellsley Road, and Nazareth Hospital for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Northeast Philadelphia. He did much of his work for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and had offices in Center City at 34 South 17th Street and 15 S. 21 St Street. Nickels designed his own home at 40 Albemarle Avenue in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. A collection of Nickels’ blueprints can be found at The Athenaeum on Washington Square. Nickels (in the photo above) poses with the Sisters of the Holy Family during the groundbreaking ceremony at Nazareth Hospital. A lover of classical music and a collector of art, he married the former Pauline Clavey, an opera singer from the City of Wilmington.
