  • Introduction

    Franke Theodore Hainworth was born on November 5th, 1917 in Cawnpore, India, to Franke Valentine Hainworth (1877 - 1962) and Esther Elizabeth Burt (1877 - 1944). His father was born in India and his mother was born in England. He had six siblings: Alexander, born 1907; Henry, born 1908; Margaret, born 1909; Eileen, born 1912; Harold, born 1915; and Catherine, born 1920. A veteran of World War II, Franke was a Lance Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. He enlisted on July 17, 1936 and was captured on June 17, 1942, in Germany. He was held in four different camps in Germany and was liberated in April of 1945. Franke Hainworth married Lily Hawkins, or Bell, in April of 1949 in Salisbury, United Kingdom. They had two daughters, April, born 1949 and another daughter. Franke died at the age of 60 in Australia and is buried in Cheltenham, City of Bayside, in Victoria, Australia.

    Franke's paternal roots lay in India, where he and his father, Franke, were born. His maternal roots were English: his mother, Esther Burt, was born in England, as was his maternal grandfather, James Burt, born 1854, and his maternal grandmother, Esther Hoar, born 1847. Esther's parents, William, born 1804, and Ann Arundell, born 1806, were also born in England.

    Franke was a member of the Royal Field Artillery during World War II. He was captured by the Germans on June 17th, 1942. He wasn't wounded when he was captured and wasn't in a working camp: he wasn't wounded while a POW either. After being held in four different camps, he was liberated in April of 1945.

President Wilson had previously declared neutrality in the war - a position supported by the majority of Americans - but after Germany declared that they would sink all ships trading with Great Britain and sunk U.S. ships, public opinion began to change. Then the Lusitania was sunk, killing 1,201 - including 128 Americans - and more U.S. ships were sunk. The U.S. could stand aside no longer.
