  • Introduction

    Freda was born in 1906 to Rachel (maiden name Freedman) and Isaac Goldenberg in Geelong. Freda enlisted as a Telegraphist from April 1943 - December 1945 with the Royal Australian Navy during World War 11. There was a plaque placed in the Geelong Synagogue "For King and Country" with her name on it - the plaque is now held at the Jewish Museum in Melbourne. Freda moved from Geelong to live at 150 Hotham Street, Melbourne. In Freda's Will she gave $135,000 to the National Gallery of Victoria towards the purchase of a painting with the specific request that it be labelled "Purchased from the Rachel and Freda Goldenberg Memorial Bequest". Four Chinese Landscapes were purchased through The Art Foundation in 1983.

In 1906, in the year that Freda Gertrude Sara Goldenberg was born, English biochemist Frederick Hopkins concluded that vitamins are essential to the human body and that a lack of vitamins caused scurvy and rickets. Scurvy and rickets were both huge problems in sailors that were at sea for extended time and the addition of vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium in their diets helped eradicate the problem.

In 1913, Freda was just 7 years old when the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.
