    Frederick Douglas Savage's father was John A. Savage Sr (born 1879) and his mother was Estelle E. Jones (born 1892). He had siblings Mary and John. When Frederick was 9 months old, he was living with his parents in Richmond, Virginia on E. 14th Street. About 20 years later, Frederick was still living with his parents and younger siblings Mary and John had joined them. Dad John was a shoe maker. Frederick married Laverna Roane-Savage (1903 - 1979) on December 28, 1933, in Richmond county, Virginia, and they had two daughters. When he was 31, Frederick was married to Laverna, they had daughter Shirley, and he was teaching. They were living in Richmond, Virginia.

In 1909, in the year that Frederick D Savage was born, explorer Robert Peary, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, claimed to have been the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. His claim has been disputed for over a century - some say that he ended up 60 miles from the North Pole. Peary was the only navigator on his team and he didn't submit his records for public review.

In 1931, he was 22 years old when on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.
