Frederick Kiffer was born on January 9, 1813 in Pennsylvania United States to Frederick Kiffer, and had a brother Enoch Kiffer. He married Eliza Ann Appleton, and they had a child Henry C. Kiffer. He married Eliza Ann Knisley, and they had children Henry C. Kiffer and Rebecca J. (Kiffer) Prather. Frederick Kiffer died at age 79 years old on November 16, 1892 in Forest County, and was buried at Kiffer Hill Cemetery.

In 1822, he was merely 9 years old when on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.
