Groton - Hon. Frederick W. Palm Jr., 63, Judge of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Probate District, passed away at home after a brief illness on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born in New London on March 30, 1947, the son of the late Frederick W. Palm and Mildred (Hawaka) Palm. Fred married Barbara A. Mushinski on July 13, 1974, in Mt. Holly, N.J., and together they made their home in Groton. Fred attended local schools and graduated from Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School in 1965. He received his bachelor of science degree in business from Bryant College in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. Following discharge, he attended the New England School of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1974. Fred practiced law in Groton, and in 1986 he was elected Judge of Probate for the Groton Probate Court, succeeding the Hon. Lillian Erb, who was both his mentor and friend. During his 24-year tenure in office, he was re-elected six times which is a testament to the stellar reputation he earned as a fair and compassionate probate judge. He was a very active member of the Connecticut Probate Assembly, serving on its executive committee and many sub-committees. He also held the position of regional coordinator for Probate Region 7 for many years. Fred considered his years of service as probate judge the most rewarding of his professional life. His genuine care and concern for others earned him the respect of attorneys who appeared before him, his peers and, most importantly, the public. He was described by the Hon. Paul J. Knierim, Probate Court Administrator for the State, as "a humble man who went out of his way to help people." Close friends will remember Fred for his innate sense of humor, the twinkle in his eye, and his ability to descriptively speak his mind. In 2006, Fred received the Champion for Children Award from the State Department of Human Services as part of the Child Abuse Prevention Initiative. In accepting the award, Fred said, "I am simply a resident who loves his community. At the end of the day, if I have helped one person, then everything has been worth it." He was a valued member of the Youth Advisory Council and a great resource for the Department of Human Services. He was also proud to have been one of the founding members of the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Connecticut. One of Fred's greatest passions was playing golf. In his spare time he could be found playing a round at Shennecossett Golf Course with his longtime friends, Bob MacDougall and Don Byles. He also loved basketball, a passion that developed when he played during his teens. He passed his love for the sport on to his daughter, Lesley, and coached various youth recreation leagues in basketball as well as softball during her childhood. He was an avid fan of the UConn men's and women's basketball teams and looked forward to watching the Big East and NCAA Tournaments every year. He also enjoyed running, staying physically fit, and walking his beloved dog, Bella. Fred was a member of the New London County Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association. He was also a member and past president of the Groton Lions Club and a member of the Groton Democratic Town Committee. Besides his wife, Fred is survived by his daughter, Lesley A. Palm of Groton; his sisters, Carole Palm Forster of Tulsa, Okla., and Joy Palm Hewitt and husband, Peter, of Waterford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the parish hall of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Connecticut Chapter, 300 Research Parkway, Suite 310, Meriden CT 06450.
