He had siblings Ada Amelia Adelaide Merrall, Victoria Melinda Jane Merrall, Rachel Edith Mary Merrall, and Henry Edward Joseph Merrall. He married Christina Ross Merrall, and had children Elsie Margaret Rachel Merrall and Edith Ella Grace Merrall. Frederick Merrall died at age 78 years old in 1963 in Victoria.

The couple later divorced in 1913. Frederick then married Catherine Priscilla Gaut (died 1936) in 1913 in Queensland and the couple lived in Prahran Gardens, Balaclava, Victoria, Australia.
