G Harry Rothberg's History: 1906 - 1992

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

According to his obituary in the LA Times, July 28, 1992, he was the husband of Hilda and father of Mike, Linda, Vicki, Robert, and Jill. He also had siblings Sam, Joseph, Anne, and Sara. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to cancer research. Harry's father was Morris Rothberg, born 1886 in Russia, died in Philadelphia PA, and his mother was Bertha Rothberg, born about 1885 in Russia. In the `1920 census, Morris and Bertha were living in Philadelphia. They stated that they were Jewish, could speak English and Morris said he was a "grocery merchant." Also in the household were sons Harry, Samuel, and Joseph and daughters Sarah and Annie. There is a record of a GH Rothberg, age 54, marrying a Hilda Thal, age 41, on January 13 1961 in Los Angeles CA. On the same date, at the same place, there is a record of GH Rothberg, 54, marrying Hilda Cowan, 41. G. Harry Rothberg , who was the owner of the American Distilling Company (where his brother Sam also worked), approached Flamingo Hotel owner Billy Wilkerson in Las Vegas and offered to put up $1 million to complete the unfinished hotel. Bugsy Siegel and and associates Harry Rothberg, Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum, and Moe Sedway used their profits from their investment in El Cortez Hotel-Casino to buy into the Flamingo as silent partners. Thus Las Vegas - and East Coast mob involvement in Las Vegas - was truly born.
