    Gary R. “Boo Boo” Gracin, age 73 of East Chicago, IN passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Graciela Gracin; Daughter, Deborah Gracin; Step son, Ricardo Carrizales; Step granddaughter, Marissa Carrizales; 2 Step grandsons, Ricardo, Jr. and Alexandro; Sister, Nan (Tony) Montezano. Visitation at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN will be from 2:00 to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 18, 2014. Cremation to follow. The American Legion will hold services 6:00pm on Thursday. Gary was a retired electrician for Union Local #697 and a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was an avid historian, net surfer and loved keeping up with Political and World news.

In 1941, in the year that Gary R. Gracin was born, on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.

In 1954, Gary was only 13 years old when on May 17th, the Supreme Court released a decision on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The ruling stated that state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional thus paving the way for integration in schools.
