Gary R Hanyon of Nicholson, Wyoming County, PA was born on September 29, 1945 to Leon Jay Hanyon and Freida May (Smith). He had siblings Jean Marie (Hanyon) and Jay Lee Hanyon. He married Linda Ruth (Yerke) and they later divorced. He had children Christine Ann (Hanyon), Gary Robert Hanyon, and TammySue (Hanyon). Gary Hanyon died at age 58 years old on May 2, 2004, and was buried on May 15, 2004 in Nicholson.

In 1945, in the year that Gary R Hanyon was born, on March 12th, a riot erupted at a Japanese internment camp in Santa Fe New Mexico. Two days earlier, white shirts with the Rising Sun on the back had been confiscated and the prisoners objected. Three leaders of the protest were removed and sent to another camp. Guards at the Santa Fe camp were armed with submachine guns, shotguns, and gun masks. On the morning of the 12th, prisoners began throwing rocks at the guards. When the "rioters" wouldn't disperse, the guards were ordered to use tear gas and batons. Four men were badly injured as a result.

In 1963, he was 18 years old when on November 22nd, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson became the 36th President of the United States when President John Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. Johnson was sworn in on the plane carrying Kennedy's body back to Washington D.C.
