After Janie's passing in 1963, he re married on Jue 4, 1966 to Maude I. Harries (1897–1976) and they were married until his passing on March 28, 1988 in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, USA.

Gene received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State in 1952 and 1953, and earned his doctorate jointly in agricultural engineering and theoretical and applied mechanics in 1959 from Iowa State University.

    On May 29, 1949 Gene married Myrtle Elinor Ellis (1927–2019) in Havensville, Pottawatomie, Kansas, USA. The couple had three children together including a son named Gregory Alan Shove (1953-2019). Mr. Shove was actively engaged with the Illinois Farm Electrification Council, specifically dedicating his efforts to the IFEC Materials Handling Committee. His notable contributions included the sponsorship of a Grain Conditioning Conference, a responsibility he skillfully coordinated for two decades. Within the agricultural engineering community, Mr. Shove held a membership with the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. His dedication to the field was recognized when he was elected as a fellow in 1986. In acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions, Mr. Shove received several prestigious awards. In 1980, he was honored with the Paul A. Funk Recognition Award for his remarkable work within the UI College of Agriculture. Additionally, he earned certificates of appreciation and merit from IFEC, along with the esteemed Silver Switch Award from the National FEC. Mr. Shove's commitment extended to various professional organizations, including the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Solar Energy Society, the Society of Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, the Izaak Walton League of America, and the Urbana Exchange Club.     Memorial services for Gene C. Shove, 73, of Urbana, ILL. were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at First Presbyterian Church, 602 W. Green St., Urbana. The Rev. Debbie Layman officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana. Also surviving are two sons, Gregory A. Shove of Racine, Wis., and Kent E. Shove of Urbana; a daughter, Myrene K. Brown of Zionsville, Ind.; three brothers, Noel D. Shove of Boulder, Colo., Cecil R. Shove of Kansas City, Mo., and Henry L. Shove of Milford, Conn.; and five grandchildren. Mr. Shove received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State in 1952 and 1953, and earned his doctorate jointly in agricultural engineering and theoretical and applied mechanics in 1959 from Iowa State University.
