He had siblings Frederick James Barned, John Albert Barned, Eva Vic (Barned) Rowe, Daisy May (Barned) Moschetti, Queenie Violetta Barned, Ethel Irene (Barned) Tobias, Ruby Pearl Barned, Phylliss Myrtle Barned, Annie Therese Barned, William Charles Barned, and Leslie Vincent Barned. He married Huldah Mary (Quick) Barned in 1914, and had children Rita Irene Barned and Myra Pearl Barned. George Barned died at age 89 years old on May 22, 1982 in Albury, NSW.

Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
