  • Introduction

    George was born in Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1828 to parents David Bates and Hannah (Johnson) Bates. He immigrated to Victoria, Australia, in 1853 and met and married Ann Kennedy in 1858. They resided in Williamstown, Victoria, and both George & his wife Ann were prison warders on the hulks anchored in the bay. George passed away in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1908 after a collision with a bicycle in the City.

    Old Colonist Passes. DEATH OF EX-WARDER BATES. CONSEQUENT on an accident, with pneumonia supervening, ex-Warder George Bradley Bates, of Cecil-street, Williamstown, expired in the Melbourne Hospital on Thursday evening. The accident took the shape of being collided with by a cyclist, the result to Mr Bates being a fractured thigh. It is stated to be erroneous that the wheelman rode off. As a matter of fact, he himself was upset. He lent Mr Bates every assistance, carried him with help to a cab, and paid the fare to the hospital. Deceased was a native of Wisbick, Cambridgeshire, and in early life followed the sea. He was born on December 28th 1828 and was consequently at the time of his demise 79 years of age. Captain Adams, Melbourne-road, and Mr W. Pearson, J.P., are understood to be fellow townsmen. The late Mr Bates arrived in Victoria in 1853 and shortly after joined the vessel Maggie, of the Harbor Department, under Captain Cox, until that vessel went out of commission. In 1854 he joined the Penal Department and remained in the service until 1889, Fix this when he retired on pension. For the past 18 years, he has resided in Williamstown. Before being transferred to Pentridge he was a warder on board the hulk Success, and was there on the night of Captain Price's murder by convicts at Port Gellibrand, being in the boat that carried the homicides back after the foul deed. Mrs Bates for some years was likewise associated with that department as wardress. The remains will be interred today in the Williamstown Cemetery.
