George Britton 1882 - 1973

George Britton Sr. of Ukiah, Mendocino County, California was born on June 20, 1882 at Round Valley to Martha (Ayers) Youree and Joseph Britton. He had a brother Frank Worthington Britton. He was the father of George Jr Britton. George Britton died at age 90 years old on January 23, 1973 in Willits, and was buried at Nomlaki Cemetery in Covelo.

In 1882, in the year that George Britton was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1900, at the age of 18 years old, George was alive when Carrie Chapman Catt succeeded Susan B. Anthony as the president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. NAWSA was created by Anthony in 1890 in order to fight for the right of women to vote in the United States. Membership in NAWSA began at 7,000 and in the decades of the struggle - women didn't get the right to vote until 1920 - membership rose to 2 million.
