George Ellen Keller Chesney, Junior, was born on May 5, 1920 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was the first-born child and only son of George and Mary Elizabeth Read Chesney. Three daughters were subsequently born to that marriage. Following the early and untimely death of his father in 1928, the children were raised by their mother in Elk City. In 1934, to overcome the difficulties of a single mother raising children alone during the Great Depression, they headed west. Their first stop was in Phoenix, Arizona for a year where they lived in a house just a block away from the state capitol building. In 1935 they continued their journey West to north San Diego County, California, residing in Oceanside. George graduated from Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School in 1939. While not a particularly serious student, he was extremely well liked and popular with his peers! Ineligible for service in World War II because of the long-term effects of ear infections, he became a member of the Oceanside Police Force. Later as a part of the home front war effort, he worked for the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in San Diego, California. In 1944 he met a young woman with two sons from a previous marriage, Ivy Southey McGown. They were married at First Lutheran Church in Ontario, California on August 6, 1944. Marianne Chesney Billings was born on November 29, 1945, followed by a son, George, on January 11, 1947. In 1953 George received what he considered the opportunity of a lifetime to return to Phoenix, Arizona (something he had wanted to do since living there for a year in the 1930’s), as a District Manager for the Thermoid Automotive Products Company. The family arrived in Phoenix on July 4, 1953. The family became active at American Ev. Lutheran Church of Phoenix and George was baptized into the Christian faith there. He became an active layman as well as a devout and serious Christian during those years. Ellen Chesney Mitchell completed the family, being born in Phoenix on February 9, 1954. In 1964, George reluctantly accepted a transfer to Northern California, now employed by the Bendix Corporation. They moved to Santa Clara, California and became members of Hope Lutheran Church where George continued his tradition of real Western Pit barbecues. In 1968, they moved to Houston, Texas where they became members of Advent Lutheran Church and later Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Ivy preceded George in death in 1976. His careful and loving care for her during her long bout with cancer was obvious to all. Later that year, he married Carol Anderson Kettle in Houston and they immediately moved to Kansas City, Missouri. They joined the Platte Woods United Methodist Church. Four years later they moved to Jackson, Tennessee. In 1983, George retired after 20 years with Bendix and he and Carol moved to their retirement home in Palm Harbor, Florida. They became active members of the Heritage United Methodist Church, where George was involved with caring and shepherding programs. Again, he was called upon to lovingly care for his wife Carol when she was required to spend the last three years of her life in a nursing home in Palm Harbor. She preceded him in death in June of 1998. George continued to live on his own and care for himself. He was redeemed on December 12, 2001, quietly, painlessly and peacefully giving himself over to his Lord’s care, while visiting his daughter, Ellen, in Pueblo, Colorado. He is survived by his five children, Ron, Larry, George, Marianne Billings and Ellen Mitchell, a stepson, Randy Kettle of Spring, Texas, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as two sisters, Marilee Hall of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Betty Smerdu of Carlsbad, California.
