George Ellis Kingham was born in 1878 to Elizabeth (Ellis) Kingham and Frederick Charles Kingham, and had siblings James Melville Kingham, Arnold Clement Kingham, and Daisy Marguerite (Kingham) Daw. George Kingham married Emily Alvis (Tansell) Kingham, and died at age 91 years old on July 2, 1970 in Adelaide, South Australia.

  • Introduction

    The Chronicle. Adelaide. S.A. 12th October 1950. FIRE AT BELTANA. BELTANA, February 4. A large store, occupied by Messrs. Kingham Bros., was burnt this morning. The fire started at 5 o'clock, and by 7 o'clock the place was gutted. A boy who slept on the premises, awoke to find the room full of smoke, and he managed to escape. The only things saved in the store were a quantity of explosives. The building was partly insured.

In 1878, in the year that George Ellis Kingham was born, on June 15th, photographer Eadweard Muybridge - at the request of Leland Stanford - produced the first sequence of stop-motion still photographs. Stanford contended that a galloping horse had all four feet off the ground. Only photos of a horse at a gallop would settle the question and, using 12 cameras and a series of photos, Muybridge settled the question: Stanford was right. Muybridge's use of several cameras and stills led to motion pictures.

In 1886, by the time he was merely 8 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
