George Ernest Gust 1916 - 1959

George Ernest Gust of Horsham, Horsham Rural City County, VIC Australia was born on August 24, 1916 in Murtoa, Yarriambiack Shire County to Charles Erne Gust and Mary Dowie Gust. He married Ivy Isabel Young in 1938, and had children Graham George Gust and Barry Kenneth Gust. George Gust died at age 43 years old in 1959 in Horsham, Horsham Rural City County.

In 1916, in the year that George Ernest Gust was born, the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. The original estimates were 714,231 casualties - 377,231 French and 337,000 German, an average of 70,000 casualties a month. Current estimates are even larger. The Battle of the Somme was also fought from July through September of the same year. Original estimates were 485,000 British and French casualties and 630,000 German casualties.

In 1924, George was only 8 years old when on January 21st, Vladimir Lenin, a leader of the Russian Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union died. He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
