    George attended Rokewood State School No. 531 where he passed in all Subjects of Instruction prescribed for the Sixth Class for which he received his Certificate of Merit No. 39052 on 20 June 1912 from Inspector Saxton. At the age of 15 he joined The Commercial Bank of Australia in Rokewood.

  • Religious Beliefs

    He was confirmed on 6 December 1914 at Rokewood Church of England by Arthur Green the Bishop of Ballarat, the Vicar was W E Pugh. He took his first communion on 14 December 1914. It is interesting to note that the Bishop began his ministry as curate at St Andrew's Brighton and also that the Bishop's younger sister Florence Emily was born in Oamaru South Island New Zealand in 1862. She founded and was headmistress of several schools in Victoria and New South Wales. Her last position was as caretaker headmistress at Firbank Church of England Girls' Grammar School in 1910. George was a parishioner of various Church of England churches and was a sidesman in those churches.
  • Military Service

    George enlisted for the First World War but was invalided home after recovering from typhoid in an English Hospital. He contracted the disease in Sierra Leone. During the Second World War he was on night observation duty in Wellington New Zealand.
  • Professional Career

    George joined The Commercial Bank of Australia in Rokewood at the age of 15 and by August 1929 had worked in branches serving Mortdale, Penshurst and Oatley. He then worked in the Hurstville Branch until 30 September 1931. From there he went to New Zealand as Manager of branches in Dunedin, Invercargill, Wellington and Christchurch. In 1946 he returned to Australia as Manager of the Sydney Office and in November 1950 was appointed Manager of the bank's head office in Melbourne. Due to ill health he retired at the end of 1955.
  • Personal Life & Family

    He married Enid Morris on 19 November 1921 and they had two children Enid (Gae)nor born 19 November 1934 and George (Stephen) born 14 September 1938. Apart from being sidesman in his local parishes he also held positions in the Boy Scouts Association. He liked going for weekend drives and taking his family away for holidays. He enjoyed playing tennis and swimming.
