George Gordon Wickes 1899 - 1981

George Gordon Wickes of Shepparton, Greater Shepparton City County, VIC Australia was born in 1899 in Walhalla to Janet Susannah (Williams) Wickes and Harlow Lewis Wickes. He had siblings Frederick Wickes, Florence Jessie Wickes, and Albert Harlow Wickes. He married Beatrice Woollard Wickes in 1927, and had children Reginald George Worner and Gordon Wickes. George Wickes died at age 82 years old in 1981 in Shepparton.

In 1899, in the year that George Gordon Wickes was born, on February 4th, the Philippine–American War began. The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.

In 1904, he was merely 5 years old when the Russo-Japanese war began. The Russian Empire and the Japanese Empire began fighting over the territories of Manchuria and Korea. Russia wanted a warm water port on the Pacific Ocean while Japan feared growing encroachment from Russia into Asia. So the Japan fleet launched a surprise attack on the Russian Navy and a one year war began. President Roosevelt of the United States brokered peace between the two nations. It was the first time in the modern era that an Asian power showed its dominance over a European power.
