George's partner was Arminta Alice Combest, and they had children Lily Bell Geren, Walter Morris Geren, Hollie Mae (Geren) Watson, Marion Lester Geren, and Zilan Lesly Geren. George Geren died at age 72 years old in 1938.

In 1866, in the year that George H. Geren was born, on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.

In 1879, at the age of just 13 years old, George was alive when on November 10th, Bell Telephone and Western Union reached an agreement. Bell Telephone would keep out of the telegraphy business and Western Union would stay out of the telephone business - leading to success for both.
