George Hurtig Jr. 1864 - 1943

George Hurtig Jr. was born in 1864 at Emerald Twp. in Paulding Co. County, Ohio to George Hurtig and Mary Anna (Schlert) Hurtig, and had siblings Josephine (Hurtig) Bopry, Frank Hurtig, John Hurtig, Aaron Hurtig, Helen Marie (Hurtig) Kuntz, Charles Thomas Hurtig, and Rosa Hurtig. George Hurtig died at age 78 years old on September 24, 1943 in Toledo, and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Defiance.

  • Introduction

    George was born and worked on the family farm. He took a liking to carpentry and made it his trade for most of his life. in 1910 George was living with his brother John and wife on their farm in Elkhart Co. Indiana. By 1920 George was living with his brother Charles on Charles's farm in Emerald Twp. Ohio. By 1930, George had moved in with his brother Frank at Frank's house at 610 Perry St. Defiance, Ohio. George had expanded his trade to include general repairs. By 1940, George was a boarder at 124-1/2 East St. in Defiance, Ohio. By this time he was 74 years old and not working. On August 6, 1943 at the age of 78, he was living on Wayne St. in Defiance and got in trouble with the law. He was arrested and sentenced to prison in Toledo, Ohio where he died a month and a half later.
