George James Sloane of Red Cliffs Australia was born in 1886 to Elizabeth Ann (Newbrook) Sloan and James Sloan. He had siblings Janet Sloan, James Sloan, William Sloan, Florence May Sloan, Thomas Sloan, Annie Ward, Margaret Kurban, and Sarah Graham ( Sloan) Bidmeade. George Sloane died at age 47 years old in 1933 in Red Cliffs.

In 1886, in the year that George James Sloane was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1892, George was merely 6 years old when on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.
