  • Introduction

I didn't get to attend Grandpa's funeral in 1977, but when his wife, Zanita passed on and was laid to rest next to him, I was very surprised to find out two things about him I didn't know. He had the same birthday as me June 25th, and his middle name was Ludwig. Someone had written it as June 23rd, but I assure you his grave marker shows June 25th. He was a singularly calm and nice person but he never really talked much, at least around me and/or my siblings, as far as I know. Would've loved to know him better.

Did you know?
In 1911, at the age of only 13 years old, George was alive when the Triangle Shirtwaist fire occurred, one of the deadliest industrial disasters in U.S. history. 146 workers (123 women and 23 men, many of them recent Jewish and Italian immigrants) died from the fire or by jumping to escape the fire and smoke. The garment factory was on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of a building in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Doors to stairwells and exits had been locked in order to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to prevent theft, so they couldn't escape by normal means when the fire broke out. Due to the disaster, legislation was passed to protect sweatshop workers.
